The Commercial Fisheries Center of Rhode Island is
the home for the Ocean State's commercial fishing community. The
center was founded to preserve commercial fishing as a profession,
culture, and way of life through promoting the sustainability of the
resource.
History
The University of Rhode Island's College of the Environment and Life
Sciences leases Building 59 at URI's East Farm Campus to the center
for $1 per year. The center refurbished the building, which was
officially opened in May 2004.
Activities
The center has hosted local and regional fisheries meetings,
performed charitable work, participated in the annual East Farm Open
House, worked with student interns, and sent fishermen into
classrooms to educate students about commercial fishing. The center
funds cooperative research activities involving fishermen and
scientists. CFCRI and its members also provide community support
through sponsoring such activities as toy drives, blood drives,
education and outreach, support of food banks, scholarships for
higher education, and habitat preservation projects.
